We know uang (money) and sewa (rent), but there’s other times when you simply have to pay a fee to get things done. As a student, if you’re lucky and hard-working, there are sometimes ways to obtain sponsorships and scholarships, but somewhere, someone has got to do the paying!
Biaya /bi·a·ya/ n. Fee, cost. Money spent to establish something, perform a task, or to gain entry into a location, event, or program.
biaya sekolahnya ditanggung oleh kakaknya : their school fee is certified (covered) by their brother
biaya hidup : living expenses necessary for daily life
biaya pengiriman : shipping fee
biaya administrasi : administrative costs
biaya parkir : parking fees
Ongkos /ong·kos/ n. Charge, expense, shopping cost, or wages. It’s very similar to biaya and indeed interchangeable in many cases, but like in English (cost vs. fee vs. expense) one of the synonyms fits better it certain contexts.
ongkos kirim : postage fee or another way to write shipping (like biaya pengiriman)
ongkos makan : the cost of eating
berapa ongkos pekerja sehari? : how much is the worker’s daily wages?
Beasiswa /be·a·sis·wa/ n. Scholarship, fellowship, or otherwise an allowance given to students or a student as a financial aid to studying.
saya tidak akan pernah bisa belajar di luar negeri tanpa beasiswa : I would never have been able to study abroad without a scholarship
coba mengajukan banyak beasiswa, karena mungkin ada yang berhasil! : try to apply for many scholarships, because maybe there’s one that works!
